Have you ever felt angry
and frustrated being a parent? Have you ever
had a day when despite your best efforts, the loving
understanding parent inside of you deteriorates into
a screaming, nagging stranger?
I have. At one time not so long ago, that was my life.
What I wanted was to be the loving nurturing parent
I always wanted to have. Instead, my image of perfect
parenting turned into my worst nightmare.
I was totally unprepared for coping with my daughter.
Our daily struggles lasted from morning to night and
were filled with screaming, nagging, and threats. I
fought her every morning to get dressed, and every evening
to get her to bed.
Although I had read numerous books on child development,
parenting, and psychology, I could no longer ignore
that fact that all of my love and good intentions were
not going to change my daughter’s behavior, and
regulate my own.
It was at this point of desperation that I stumbled
upon some skills that would change our lives—forever.
As I began to work with and apply these tools in my
own home, I began to experience dramatic changes in
my family. Over time the yelling, threatening and name-calling
decreased as I found new ways of relating with my daughter.
I felt more in charge, and she became very responsive
to my more humane approach. But most important I began
to feel better about myself as a parent.
Today I’m a licensed family therapist with more
than 25 years of experience. I’ve written two
parenting books, The
Magic of Encouragement and The
Divorced Parent, produced two audio programs,
Parenting
for Healthy Self-Esteem and Raising
Capable, Confident Kids. I am also a co-author
of Chicken Soup books and columns and have developed
an online parenting course Chicken
Soup for the Soul’s Life Coaching for Parents:
Six Weeks to Sanity.
Here is a short quiz
for you to guage how you’re doing as a parent.
Don’t worry. This is just for you. It’s
simply a way for you to acknowledge your strengths as
well as assess the areas that could use your attention.

Testimonials for Stephanie Marston“We cannot
thank you enough for the wonderful job you did as keynote
speaker of our Parent’s Day. You received high
marks as well as being identified as ‘the favorite’
part of the event by many. The stories you told added
a personal touch and enabled the parents to identify
with you.”
—M.W. and S.G, Esteemed Woman

“Thank you for the wonderful presentation you
gave at our school. The seminal message dealing with
the issues of adolescence was down to earth and at the
same time dynamic. Using wisdom, humor and personal
life experience you managed to engage and teach an audience
eager to guide and protect their children in what often
seems to them an alien world. The positive feedback
from those who attended and the exceptional sale of
books was an indicator of the huge success of the evening…they
will be a dependable guide and source of inspiration
for the many parents who bought them.”
—M.M., John Thomas Dye School
“Stephanie is one of the most down-to-earth, personable
speakers with whom I’ve had the pleasure to work.
And her presentation was right on the mark. She mixed
just the right amount of humor and anecdotes with statistics,
research, and guidelines to hold the audience’s
attention for the hour. Everyone seemed to relate well
to her, there were a lot of raised hands, head nodding,
and smiles of understanding.”
—D.A., Pajaro Valley Prevention
and Student Assistance
Parenting Styles“I just wanted to let you know
how pleased we were with your presentation on discipline
with love. Out of the many speakers we have had, you
were by far the most dynamic. You were the one individual
who kept our audience captive with all those wonderful
anecdotes. The parents who attended the presentation
praised you highly and asked when you would return.”
